UNASUR asks to respect results released by electoral body


Caracas, 15 Abr. AVN.- Chief of the accompaniment mission of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), Carlos Alvarez, urged to respect the results released by the National Electoral Counil (CNE) since it is "the only competent authority in the matter abiding by the constitutional and legal provisions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela."
In addition, he said "every claim, questioning or extraordinary procedure requested by any of the contenders in the voting process must be channeled and solved through the legal order in force."
Reading a statement at the seat of the National Electoral Council, Alvarez informed that the UNASUR mission will hand over on Monday the preliminary report of observations on the voting process held yesterday to CNE president Tibisay Lucena.
Alvarez also congratulated the Venezuelan people for the spirit of civic responsibility and democracy proved during the voting process of April 14.
"UNASUR has witnessed a broad exercise of citizenship and freedom on behalf of the Venezuelan people," he stressed.
