Venezuela ejercerá Vicepresidencia de la 64 Asamblea General de la ONU
(MINCI) The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, through its permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Jorge Valero, was elected to assume the vice presidency of the 64th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The established period is from September, 2009, to September 2010.
Venezuela, whose candidacy had been presented last February, will share the vice presidency with Barbados and El Salvador. These nations were also elected to represent Latin America and the Caribbean (Grulac), in accordance with the geographical distribution of the regional groups that comprise the UN.
On Wednesday, June 10, the election was held by consensus during a plenary session of the General Assembly. 21 vice presidents were elected, along with the president, Libyan Ali Treki, who represents the group of African nations.
After this election, Ambassador Valero, who is also Vice Minister of Foreign Relations for North America and Multilateral Issues for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, said that Venezuela will work to strengthen collaboration with the presidency of Dr. Treki in the next session of the General Assembly, just as it did, with Nicaraguan religious leader Miguel D’Escoto.
