Nicaragua Waits for Vote Recount

Managua, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) Nicaragua waits on Thursday for a vote recount, authorized by the election council in Managua to avert violence in the nation after regional elections held on Sunday.

Dozens of followers of Sandinista candidate to Managua mayor's office Alexis Arguello are demonstrating in front of the CSE (Supreme Election Council) since Wednesday's announcement of a vote recount.

Disturbances began on Monday when the opposition Nicaragua Liberal Party refused to accept the partial results that showed they were losing against the Sandinista Liberation Front in most municipalities.

Facing the violence unleashed by followers of Liberal candidate Eduardo Montealegre, CSE President Roberto Rivas authorized the vote recount.

Rivas said that, though there is no provision for this recount in the current election legislation, the decision was made to show Nicaragua citizens their vote has been respected.
