De ambassadeur van Cuba laat weten dat vanaf woensdagochtend tot vrijdag­middag een condoleanceregister kan worden getekend.

Juan Almeida Bosque, wapenbroeder van Fidel Castro en Che Guevara tijdens de Cubaanse revolutie, is vrijdagavond op 82‑jarige leeftijd overleden.

Dat is zaterdag door de Cubaanse regering bekendgemaakt.

Almeida overleed vrijdagavond rond 23.30 uur aan hartfalen, maar zal vol­gens een verklaring van de Cubaase regering 'voor altijd voortleven in de harten en herinneringen van zijn landgeno­ten'. Zondag is uitgeroepen tot dag van nationale rouw. Almeida was een van drie nog in leven zijnde 'Beve­lheb­bers der revolutie' een eretitel die hij alleen nog deelde met mede­strijders Ramiro Valdes en Guillermo Garcia.

Almeida werd op 27 februari 1927 geboren in Havana en begon zijn loopbaan op 11‑jarige leeftijd als metselaar. Als rech­tenstudent raakte hij bevriend met Fidel Castro, een studiege­noot met revolutionaire opvattingen. Almeida sloot zich in 1952 aan bij Castro's strijd tegen dictator Fulgencio Batis­ta. Een jaar later streed Almeida aan de zijde van de toekomstige Cubaanse president, toen die een aanval leidde op de Moncada, een kazerne in het oosten van het land. De aanval mislukte en Almeida, Fidel Castro en diens broer Raul werden gevangengezet op Isla de los Pinos.

De jonge revolutionairen werden in 1955 vrijgelaten. In Mexico vormden ze een guerillaleger. Ze keerden in december 1956 terug naar Cuba, aan boord van het Amerikaanse jacht 'Granma', en begonnen een offensief vanuit de oostelijke Sierra Maestra. Ook deze operatie werd geen succes. Bij de landing op Cuba werden verreweg de meeste revolutionairen door het Cubaanse leger gedood; de Castro's en Almeida behoorden tot de slechts zestien overle­venden.

Niettemin werd de guerrilla voortgezet, niet in de laatste plaats onder leiding van Almeida, en in 1959 ontvluchtte Batista Havana. Almeida be­kleedde verschillende functies in de nieuwe revolutionaire regering, voor­namelijk op militair terrein. Onderdeel van Almeida's functie als vooraan­staand lid van de Communistische Partij van Cuba was in later jaren het ontvan­gen van ambassadeurs en andere buitenlandse hoogwaardig­heidsbekle­ders.

In 2003 maakte Almeida bekend dat hij het rustiger aan ging doen, vanwege hartproblemen. Toch werd hij nog regelmatig in het openbaar gezien. Eerst aan de zijde van Fidel Castro, tot die in 2006 door ziekte en ouder­dom gedwongen werd zich terug te trekken, en daarna in de buurt van diens broer Raul, die de taken van Fidel overnam.

De regering noemde Almeida zaterdag een 'toonbeeld van revolu­tionaire kracht, stellige overtuigingen, moed, vaderlandslief­de en dienstbaar­heid aan het volk'.

In overeenstemming met de wensen van Almeida zal hij niet in het openbaar worden opgebaard. Over zijn begrafenis wordt volgens de verklaring van de regering later meer bekendge­maakt.

Venezuelan people receive President Chavez after successful international tour

Caracas, Sept 11 ABN.- The Venezuelan people and the members of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) as a whole throw themselves to the streets of Caracas city and Vargas state so as to receive the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, after his successful tour through countries of Africa, Middle East, Asia and Europe.

The call was reaffirmed on Thursday by the PSUV through one of its leaders, Dario Vivas, who informed that there will take place mass meetings in different areas of Caracas capital city and in Vargas state, where is located the International Airport.

With the activity, Vivas explained, “we will show to the world the solidarity and support to President Chavez”.

Moreover, he announced that the people will go out to the streets to “join the Commander since the (International) Airport Maiquetia, through Soublette Avenue, up to Sucre Avenue and we will take him to Miraflores (the presidential palace).”

President Chavez ends this way a tour that took him through different countries of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe, aiming at strengthening the strategic alliances established to reinforce the principle of integration and cooperation among the nations.

Mexicans, Cubans Want Cuban 5 Free

Mexico, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Mexicans and Cubans demanded Friday in this capital the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in the United States 11 years ago.

Cuban ambassador to Mexico Manuel Aguilera retold in front of a large auditorium some details of the manipulated trial against Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, and Fernando Gonzalez, condemned to harsh sentences.

Their real crime was to defend their country from violent actions by anti-Cuban terrorist groups settled in that northern nation.

Aguilera recalled how in 2005 the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded for a first time, in a case relative to the United States, in which the Cubans' detention was inadmissible.

The White House and the Court of Appeals from that northern country recognized that evidences of the trial have been manipulated to create spying charges, the diplomat stated.

"Top military officials who appeared as witnesses and reviewed alleged evidences swore they had founded nothing to involve searching secret information or affect the US security," Aguilera said in the official transcription of the trial.

The Court of Appeals unanimously determined in September 2008 there was no proof that those men had copied or provided secret information, so he termed erroneous the accusation of spying.

Realiza Venezuela jornada de solidaridad con antiterroristas cubanos

Caracas, 12 sep (PL) Organizaciones sociales e instituciones venezolanas desarrollan hoy una jornada para exigir la liberación de los cinco antiterroristas cubanos presos en Estados Unidos, la cual incluye una marcha hasta la plaza Bolívar de esta capital.

Según el Movimiento Nacional de Solidaridad y Amistad Mutua Cuba-Venezuela, el recorrido concluirá con una tribuna antiimperialista en el referido lugar, donde reclamarán justicia para René González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino y Fernando González.

Los Cinco, como se conocen internacionalmente, cumplen este sábado 11 años de encierro luego de ser detenidos en Miami, Florida, por infiltrar organizaciones terroristas radicadas en esa sureña ciudad que promovían actos violentos contra la Isla.

En otras regiones se realizarán similares acciones, aseguraron en un comunicado los organizadores de la campaña.

De acuerdo con los activistas, las movilizaciones servirán además para demandar al gobierno norteamericano la excarcelación de los cinco.
